Music Video: Final Ideas

After researching serval music videos, mainly in the genre of EDM (electronic dance music) we decided to make our music promo a concept style video. We had a brief story line to match our song which made it easy to plan our music video and focus on effects and other techniques to make it stand out.

As the song is entitled Lose it, we created the idea that the protagonist loves dance, but when in a group, she falls behind because she lacks the ability to let go and really perform. Throughout the video, she dances in different locations and works with other dancers as she builds confidence and technique before performing on stage, and standing out because she has learnt to lose it.

In this genre, dance is a key feature, therefore we have made it an important element of our music promo. We also decided to include fluorescent lighting where we could to give it a clubbing vibe. In the bedroom shots, we added our own purple lighting to give the footage more definition and life which would also connect it to the street shots. We linked this location to a repeated line in the song. We selected this highstreets as we would have the benefit of using the fluorescent lighting poles which would tie our video and themes together.

For the lip-syncing shots of our music video, we will keep the shots neutral and simple as this will draw the attention to the protagonist, Bella’s face and lips. We must make sure that the lips are moving in time with the words of the song to make it look high quality. As bright lights are used to give music promos a clubbing theme of excitement and dancing, we will project a ‘ink drop in water’ effect, found on YouTube, on top of Bella and a plain white background to maximise the effect. This will be sharpened and brightened in post-production to make it eye-catching and unique.

Most of the cuts will be every 4 counts to make a steady pattern and work in conjunction with the music. However, we don’t want our video to be repetitive and boring therefore, we will vary the length of shots occasionally to make it more exciting. The shots will shorten towards the climax of the song to create an effect on the audience, this will convey with typical conventions of other music videos in this genre but stand out.

During the editing, we will make out video look high quality and professional. Through adjusting colours and tones, we will sharpen the shots and brighten them to create continuity in our music promo. We will also use techniques such as the stabiliser to improve shot stillness. Furthermore, during this phase we will play around with other effects found in Photoshop and online to make our music video more memorable and attractive to our target audience.
